When is a placebo effect not an effect?
It is often stated, paradoxically, that a treatment is not effective when trials have shown a placebo effect. This should be rephrased 'that the tested treatment is not more effective than the placebo' if we are not to confuse ourselves and the public in the current debate on complementary and alternative medicine.
متن کاملA review and analysis of placebo treatments, placebo effects, and placebo controls in trials of medical procedures when sham is not inert.
Researchers examining the efficacy of medical procedures make assumptions about the nature of placebo. From these assumptions they select the sham interventions to be used in their trials. However, placebo is not well defined. A number of definitions are contradictory and sometimes misleading. This leads to problems in sham-controlled studies of medical procedures and difficulties interpreting ...
متن کاملThe effect of iron supplement on children with euthyroid goiter: a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial
Background Endemic goiter is present in most parts of Iran. Iron deficiency adversely affects the physiology of thyroid. The initial steps of thyroid hormone synthesis are catalyzed by thyroperoxidases and are dependent on iron. In many developing countries, children are at high risk of both goiter and iron deficiency anemia. In addition, iron deficiency may alter central nervous system contro...
متن کاملPlacebo Effect ▶ Placebo Placebo Response ▶ Placebo Placement - Pending Requirement ▶ Stay - Put Requirement Placenta
A simulated intervention (often a drug but potentially other interventions) used as a control/comparison in research studies. As suggested in the title of a book on the subject (Shapiro & Shapiro, 2000), the effects of such treatment can be powerful (what is termed to placebo response or effect). In drug studies, for example, the use of a placebo (inert agent that is packaged so as to be indist...
متن کاملConditioned placebo analgesia persists when subjects know they are receiving a placebo.
UNLABELLED Belief in the effectiveness of a placebo treatment is widely thought to be critical for placebo analgesia. Many types of placebo responses--even those that depend on conditioning--appear to be mediated by expectations that are strengthened as treatment cues are reinforced with positive outcomes. However, placebo effects may occur even when participants are aware they are receiving a ...
